It’s Beginning to Look Alot Like Christmas

Okay, so I wasn’t away long, but I did get a good start back in my journal, which feels great!! Many times, I just need to process it all on paper and then that helps me re-group!!

So, Seattle has had a bit of weather these days. A few weeks ago, it was flooding, and now we just had an amazing snow storm that shook up the whole area. Apparently, Seattle is not ready for regular bouts of snow. Too many hills and not enough snow-plowing equipment.

Monday we had a storm that so amazingly wiped out the regular flow of traffic… People with a normal 45 min commute or similar, got on the freeways around 4:30pm and didn’t get home until 2am. This was not an exaggeration… it happened to tons of people. Craziness… and it didn’t get any better until today when it all started melting.

My nephew and I went out and built a snowman. We used what we had around to “dress” him and he finally fell over today in the meltdown… It was great fun to play in the snow. We just stayed off the freeways and side roads.

I have to share that on Friday, my sister, nephew and I went to get a tree. We came home and decorated for Christmas with beautiful music playing and cinnamony smells to boot!! The next morning, we woke up to a winter wonderland… totally unexpected. And then… for the grand finale, she and I had already purchased tickets to the theater production of White Christmas at the 5th avenue theater for Saturday night… So we went, even though it was crazy snowing. How very fun to see that production when it really was snowing outside! It was such a great performance, by the way!! Very well done.

All that tree-finding and decorating was worth it!! It was almost as if we brought on all the snow!! (Well, I don’t really want to be responsible for all that…. but you know what I mean!)

    I love Christmas-time!!

    I Miss My Journal

    I’m done for a while.

I really miss my journal and I need to go there again.

    Thanks for reading.

I’ll be back when I have a bit more inspiration. I want to write about what I started writing about… and I feel like I have been writing about alot of whatever, just for the sake of keeping this going. There’s no creativity in that.

My grandmother used to always say, “So Long”, instead of “Goodbye” which is so final. I always liked that!

    So Long.

Cyndee – why don’t write about how you make people smile when you just show up. How you interact with children, especially Jack. How you can fix a watch band (I can’t). How you make great deviled eggs. How you can paint beautiful works that us non-artistic types envy. How your long healthy walks just end up at Starbucks for a latte :-)

Hey now, Erin is really the one who ends us up at Starbucks… Ask her, it’s true!

Thanks for the encouraging words, Alex!

Okay, you’re right… I haven’t put up a fight. A little walk is better than no walk at all, and coffee is always good!

    Akeelah and the Bee

    Okay, enough of the pirate!

I meant to post the following, long ago and am just getting to it now. I saw the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, a few months back and I thought it was great! There was a quote used in the movie that you may have heard or read before, but it was the first time it has come to my attention and I have thought about it many times since. I paused the movie to write down the quote and then did a google search on it!! Here it is… Let me know what you think about what she says…

    by Marianne Williamson

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

I agree with this quote, but it is definitely not how we are raised in this world, or at least here in America. We like to think we are building self-esteem in our kids, but often we are limiting them by not giving them healthy views of pride, humility, and grace.

“We are all meant to shine, as children do.” This is probably my favorite part. It reminds me to have a child like heart in all I do and am, even in my view of myself!

I think there is more freedom to shine when we know who we are in Jesus. I like to call that Christ-esteem, instead of self-esteem!! Sometimes I don’t feel that great about myself, but if I focus on who Jesus is in me… I can feel great about Him in me!!

Thanks for your thoughts, Sherie, I think she has some really great points!

By the way, I understand the quote is actually from Nelson Mandela.

Hi Sherie, While looking up the quote, I found that many people have credited the quote to him, but here are a few links that state the actual speech by Nelson Mandela and an explanation of why he was misquoted…

      Note About Nelson Mandela
This quote is often found on the Internet incorrectly credited to Nelson Mandela from his Inauguration Speech, 1994, especially the last sentence of that quote, “As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

For reference, here are links to two official African government sites with Nelson Mandela’s 1994 Inauguration Speech:
Mandela: Inauguration Address – Cape Town, 09 May 1994, via South Africa Government Online Official Web site.
Statement Of The President Of The African National Congress Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela At His Inauguration As President Of The Democratic Republic Of South Africa Union Buildings – Pretoria, 10 May 1994, via ANC’s (African National Congress) Official Web site.

    Aye Matey!

So I was a pirate for Halloween! I actually got to be one twice, once on Friday and again last night! I enjoyed every minute. If I could have been one all week, I would have!! It is amazing what happens when you put a sword in your hand and proclaim…. “Aaaargh” to everyone! What an adventurous feeling of freedom!! I have wanted to be a pirate ever since I saw the Pirates of the Caribbean movies!!

We are actually going through the book of Colossians at Pathways and there is an interesting post about “outward appearance” this week if you would like to go there. I had to laugh as I sported this outward appearance…. I wonder what it says about me??

My nephew (16 months old) got the hang of trick-or-treating right away!! We went to the neighborhood grocery store where there was a friendly kid’s carnival and much candy to be handed out. He was the cutest little Tigger you ever did see, and many told him so!! He politely accepted each piece of candy and proudly placed it in his pumpkin bag. That pumpkin bag wasn’t going anywhere… he had a vice-grip on it!!!

I know Halloween can be creepy, but we were able to enjoy the dressing up and eating candy part!! But then we came home and had to take the masks off and jump back into reality!! Being someone else can be oh so fun for the moment!!!

    Aaaarrrrgh!!!!
